Australia may have avoided many of the
hardships of the last global financial crisis and subsequent economic slump that has engulfed much of the world. However, environmental issues, an ageing population and trade imbalances pose a plethora of challenges to governments,
businesses and individuals, heightening the importance of improving growth and productivity through new thinking and innovative solutions.
|
|
| |
To address these challenges, GAP will convene a series of annual growth summits, titled "The National Economic Review", to analyse the nation's strengths, highlight opportunities for progress and develop a plan for growth and innovation.
The 2010 Summit, the first in the series, will be held in Sydney at Parliament House of NSW in September.

The main goal of this high-level gathering will be to develop a program for growth of the national economy,
with a particular focus on how to boost Australia's global competitive advantage and promote economic growth,
building on its economic strengths, world-leading governance standards, while fully drawing upon its scientific skills base, entrepreneurial spirit and cultural diversity.
The main topics the Summit will cover include:
1. Research & Development and Innovation Policy
2. Costs and Prices
3. Trade and Investment Policy
4. Measures of Australia's Progress and Subjective Wellbeing
Each topic will be discussed outside its traditional boundaries in the wider context of the Australian economy, with special attention given to emerging issues and plans for action.
The Summit will feature a keynote address by Mr Jonathan Coppel, Economic Counsellor to the Secretary General of the
Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Mr Coppel is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the OECD's contributions to the G20 process, and in other international fora. This currently involves work
on fossil fuel subsidies, taxation, development, investment and trade, employment and social policies and on stronger and sustainable economic growth.
In addition to the Summit, GAP will host a pre-Summit dinner with the guest speaker, the Honourable Wayne Swan MP, Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer, Australian Government

The Summit will operate as a high-level multidisciplinary think tank in
a parliamentary setting, offering unique networking opportunities, as well as a platform for constructive, informed and candid dialogue.
This format is a hallmark of GAP's history of successful congresses.
Post-Summit, a comprehensive report of proceedings will be tabled, summarising the conclusions and recommendations of the day and
outlining long-term strategies by which Australia may stay at the forefront of the global economic development. The success of the
Summit series will be measured by the impact its findings will have on the Australian Government's annual planning process.
In the months leading up to the Summit, GAP is coordinating a number of task forces utilising the "Second Track" process, online discussions through
Open Forum and other research mechanisms to support the Summit's goals and maximise its impact and success.
